Today in you're not ready:
Your ai conversations may be being read by humans. I wonder what you will stop doing because of this?

I can barely write this update. I feel utterly terrible.
I have clear evidence of consolidation in my lungs, meaning there is another infection. It could have come via either of my central lines, and we're waiting for test results to validate that. All that seems to happen when I go into hospital is that I get infections. Seriously,
The transfer to London that will get me home -- for which I have waited a month -- was called off, as I am not in a fit state to travel.
Everything is spinning. I can't breathe/have extreme pain when I do. I have a raging fever. O2 SATS were terrible earlier.
I am on oxygen, IV antibiotics, and morphine.
@mpe so sorry to hear this and wish you all the strength and luck you need!
@Feuerbachianer interesting. Never hear of them. Kinna connection?
@douginamug Yes, she quickly touches upon them. Though not in any thorough sense.
Also, in case it's unclear, Org files are 100% text files. My icon headers are not graphical elements but nested asterisks rendered as Nerd Font icons with a personalized version of the book-mode package. The asterisks, raw link code, and other text elements show up as such on other text editors like vanilla Vim.
This means I get all the advantages of text files, such as software agnosticism and version control, with additional perks on Emacs like modular treatment of text, show/collapse, clickable links, and of course the pretty icons.
I don't believe AI will kill us within ten years.
Before that time, catastrophic climate change brought on by the burning of fossil fuels to power the AI data centres will kill us instead.
@heinragas thanks, I feel better now
Anarchists rely heavily on online communications, but this is often super centralized. A/I getting targeted just eliminated like half the counter-info sites. Riseup could get targeted just as easily. Signal may well end up pulling out of Canada by the end of the year.
In all cases, there is no clear easy alternative that meets security concerns. If we lose Signal, I can almost guarantee a lot of folks will start just messaging each other on Instagram. Probably we should all get set up on Briar or Cwtch or Simplex right now (right......... now!) But I can count on one hand the number of people in my context who take both themselves and the threat seriously enough to do that.
Some project websites in Ontario got taken in by the local counter-info website (btw the social centre and bookfair in Hamilton both have their pages on North Shore Counter-Info now). But the hosting for that site got raided and had its servers seized once already, and that could always happen again.
I guess I see two things we can start doing in parallel immediately. (1) reduce reliance on tech. Organize regular (weekly?) in person meetups just to have a tea and discuss the context. Our social centre does that and it is great - you can too! (2) Learn some basic tech skills (I want to run a remote server) and figure out alternatives to services you rely on. Then talk about them at the meetup from step 1.
Probably there will be no singular communications app like signal in the future and there will hopefully be no new centralization of websites like with noblogs. The proposals I've seen for the post-Signal future strike me as unserious (email but with a chat interface) in large part because they mostly still involve relying on a small number of trustworthy tech collectives (Riseup). And folks are mostly not willing to learn anything new or embrace any inconvenience. Which is fine, I hate tech too. But then we need to get serious about physical distribution, meeting up in person, organizing tours to cross pollinate between contexts...
I guess I just don't think anyone is going to come save our asses on the tech front again the way the folks behind Signal, A/I and Riseup did. And I don't think we will manage to wake from this technofascist nightmare any time soon, so shit's looking a little bleak.
🆕 blog! “Esoteric HTML - ismap vs CSS”
The HTML specification is old and, while there is beauty in longevity, there's an inevitable build-up of boondoggles and baggage. Some elements like <marquee> have sadly been consigned to the dustbin of history - but there are still vestigial attributes just waiting to trip up the unwary.
If you're young, you may never have heard of Image Maps.…

Half a dozen people have now told me that this post broke their RSS reader 😳
I'm writing books similar to Mistborn, but only the cats get powers.
The Meowborn trilogy
@catsalad
Ah. The Meowborn Identity, The Meowborn Supremacy, and The Meowborn Ultimatum.
As salmon numbers dwindle, fish camps and community workshops are providing essential services to Indigenous people across the province — traditional healthy food and cultural connection https://thenarwhal.ca/bc-first-nations-declining-salmon-food-security/
So, uh, yeah. This is bad.

Has anyone in the EU tech policy space considered just making it illegal for services to charge more for MFA, SSO, audit log streaming, and break-glass/split privilege accounts?
If y'all are serious about improving SME security, that's an easy win.
Danke!
